So a lawyer, a rabbi and a priest walk into a bar . . .
Unfortunately, substance use and mental health disorders are no joke in the legal profession. In fact, a recent study by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation indicates rates of substance abuse over twice that of the national average, and rates of lawyer mental health disorders are even higher. Few in the legal profession are likely totally surprised by those statistics. Yet, while we’re over-represented in rates of addiction, we’re profoundly under-represented in rates of those seeking treatment. But why? This FREE CLE program will discuss the data surrounding substance use disorders in the legal profession, suggest some possible contributors to the profession’s elevated rates, discuss the barriers to seeking help and recovery, and examine the legal culture and ways we can encourage greater understanding of substance use and mental health disorders, and the means to recovery.
Faculty: Kevin M. Chandler, JD, MA, LADC is Director of the Legal Professionals Program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Center City, MN. Prior to joining Hazelden, Chandler practiced law in the Minneapolis firm of Opperman & Paquin, focusing primarily on antitrust and securities litigation. Mr. Chandler was elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 1992 and in 1994 was named Senate Majority Whip. A graduate of The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C., Chandler also served as Counsel to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Consumer Protection and Finance, and clerked in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice under The Honorable Douglas Ginsburg.
